During the last lecture of photography we went out to capture some street photography. These were taken with a compact camera, so I was quite limited regarding equipment. However, these are the ones that did not come out totally bad. I am well aware that there is plenty of room for improvement, but that is why I am attending this course; to learn.

Here are some examples of photography by genres that I found over the internet. These are for inspiration, although if the right equipment is not available, it is quite hard to reach this standard.

Second year

This is the first semester of my second year as a Media student. I am pleased to say that the college I attend has been equipped with a high-end Television studio, over the past summer. This will give me, and my class mates, a more practical approach in our studies. Of course, this means that we have more intense assignments.

In this semester we have four units; Interview techniques, Research techniques, Multi-camera Techniques, and Photography & Photographic practice. Each of the Units have an assignment brief involving 3-4 tasks. The first tasks have mostly been handed in.

Interview techniques Task 1 - We had to create a 10 minute presentation to show that we understood how to undergo an interview; the research and skills required, the purpose and production techniques. Furthermore, we were requested to create a 3 minute test interview, in which we clearly show that we understood the subject. Personally, I think it was a very effective task, however the presentations took longer than the stated time.

Research techniques Task 1 - This task had two parts; we had to research Market Research Companies, and we had to find a Producer of a current or past production of a programme, that falls in the genre of children, documentaries, News, Sports, or Current affairs. Personally, this was another effective task in which we understood what type of research is required in the media industry.

Multi-Camera techniques Task 1 - This task was another presentation, this time individual. We were required to conduct research of live events and studio productions and compare the two. Through this task we understood the scale and budget, technology used, and roles required in each of the multi-camera television productions.

Photography and Photographic practice Task 1 - We were each assigned a theme, out of: photojournalism, fashion, advertising, architecture, and portraiture. Then we researched about our genre of photography and produced digital images, from which the best 5 were chosen and presented. A presentation of 5 different applications of photography was also produced, identifying the ideal equipment used in each one. Although, personally, I think that the presentation was not as effective since we did not actually present it.

That is all for now. I will keep updating my reflective thoughts regarding the units.

[I shall be changing the current background of this blog, as I am not pleased with it.]

Unit evaluation [Unit 19 Task 4b]

In the second semester we had a new unit called 'Digital graphics for Interactive Media'. This involved 4 tasks, which required us to create an infographic, a blog for our assignments and media related topics, and creating a MediaCAST identity for a blog, and marketing it to other MediaCAST students by means of Posters.

The Infographic had to explain pixels, vectors, optimisation, raster image, bit depth etc., in an interesting manner for any viewer. I think this was an effective method which helped me learn more about the tools in Photoshop and Illustrator, and the capabilities that they offer.

Our personal course blog is another effective method. Mostly because through blog writing we learnt how to present information to the public, and since we are media students, this is important. Also, we were expected to follow our colleagues blogs so we could see how they presented their resources and information. At the end of the unit we had to print all our blogs to provide a hard evidence of our research, film reviews, and work that we carried out through the semester.

As for the MediaCAST blog, I think it was effective simply for sorting out roles in a group, designing the banners/posters, and researching affective ways to produce and market a blog. Although, I honestly think that for MediaCAST it would have been ideal to create a website with its own host, as this would have been more professional rather than a common blog. Also, as a student, I prefer to look for MediaCAST information and resources at one online source; the Facebook group, since these two sources could contain the same information.

Throughout this unit I have gained more knowledge about Photoshop and Illustrator, together with improved review writings. I would have appreciated more tutorials and different Photoshop tasks, besides the ones that we already had, though I am pleased with the tutorials and the way they were presented.

I did not find any major difficulties in this unit, besides the ones I mentioned above. Overall the unit was one of my favourites, hence this reflective evaluation for closing the assignment.

Banners & Colour schemes…

I have created some more 3 different banners and another 2 colour schemes. I must say, these are meant for the MediaCAST blog.

Banner

This is not exactly a banner. It is meant to be part of the background on the left/right hand side. Nonetheless, this replaces the usual banner.

Mediacast_blog_logo8

Inspired from my own banner…up there^

Mediacast_blog_logo99

Simply another banner.

These are the two other colour schemes.

[P.S. It would have been better if this work was done for our own blog, and a proper website for MediaCAST was created…but then again, what do I know?]
